Mandarin Chinese, a language that is becoming more and more important, is taught at all levels. Josiah Quincy is seeking to establish a dual language program in which academic subjects are taught in Mandarin.
Thanks to the talents of our Mandarin teachers, students not only learn words, but also learn Mandarin through songs, poetry, calligraphy and art. 
JQS has 2 full-time Mandarin teachers.  The are Ms. Beimei Long and Mr. Xiao Ping Xie.
A letter to Parents (of our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders)

Dear Parents,
This is Ms. Long on behalf of Mr. Xie saying 你好/Hello to you.
In this letter I want to talk about 3 things: 

1. During weekend or vacation, if you have chance to spend time with your child, and would like to practice Mandarin for fun, please ask your child to tell you words and sentences in Mandarin in the following categories:
· Numbers, color, Chinese zodiac animals, fruits when you go grocery shopping with your child.
· Weather, greetings, names of body parts,
· Names of family members/school supplies/of places in school; Sentences are also with the same categories mentioned above –self, family, school.
· Songs and rhymes that your children know.        We will start to review and learned the Community and the World unit in May and June.
So please practice words and sentences with your child in May in the Community and the World category.

2. To practice Mandarin, this website is very easy to use, with sounds:
On the JQS Mandarin website, there is a link for “Chinese for Kids”. There you will see on the tool bar “learning Chinese” that contains a lot of useful resources, including how to write words in order and Mandarin games:

3. For your reference about what your child is learning in Mandarin:
Elementary Mandarin Curriculum (aligned with MA State Foreign Language Curriculum Guideline but in more details) requires our students to be in Stage 1, Novice Low level (please see the attachment on the back of the paper) . Students know certain words in the above mentioned 4 categories, and speak simple sentences, but not required to make up sentences on their own in Mandarin. Nevertheless, Mr. Xie and I teach from Novice to Mid and High level, in order to meet the needs of all our students, only we do not put pressure on the students so they can keep their interest in Mandarin. Instead, we aim to make the once-a-week Mandarin class both fun and effective.

1. 在周末或假期中, 如果有時間和您的孩子在一起,請多多鼓勵他/她說中文,範圍:自我;學校;家庭。比如介紹自己的年齡/性別/頭發長短/愛好, 介紹家庭和學校,每天的作息時間,水果,十二生肖,節日生日,喜歡的顏色和季節等。

會說普通話(國語)的家長,如果你多說普通話/國語, 你的孩子會每天進步,因為處在同一個情景之中有助于理解語言。即使有時候孩子傾向於聽而不願意說,他們仍然在進步。在學習語言的四個方面“聽,說,讀,寫”中,聽說最重要。

2. 有兩個很好的網站可以練習中文:
下面這個網站是昆士小學的中文網站,打開後去”Chinese for Kids”, 然後點工具欄的最後一個 ”learning Chinese”, 裏面有很多練習,還包括寫中文字的筆劃練習和中文遊戲:

3. 另外推薦兒童電視劇《喜羊羊》給家長。這部電視劇共有500多集,內容健康風趣,人物配音的清晰度很高,在用詞方面重復性強,有字幕,有利于學習中文。

4. 您的子女在學校中文課堂上學什麽,我們怎麽教?
在我們昆士小學,SEI班的中文課超過麻州和波士頓教育局的教學大綱要求,原因是美國的官方語言是英語,大部分学校中文课做为外语一周只有一次,所以教學大綱對小學的中文要求是介紹性的,初級的。 學生在“自我,家庭,學校,社區和世界”這四個範疇內會說單詞和簡單的句子,不要求會自己造句子。

SEI班上的同學大多数在美國出生長大,在家裏大都說廣東話。對於學中文來說,會說一種漢語方言是學習中文的優勢。 這十幾年來昆士的中文老師在SEI班上基本上用中文教學,“在遊泳中學習遊泳”,需要的時候會用英文解釋,同學也可以舉手提問。這裏要說明的是:用中文教學可以練習聽力,增加學習中文的時間,但是我們考核的標準仍然按照教學大綱,請家長不要擔心。
