COMPUTERS All students get computers and technology training that further develop the classroom common core curriculum. Topics include:
LIBRARY
| MANDARIN - Teaching 4 themes: Self, Family, School, Community and the World. Class time: once a week. A.W.C.class: two times a week. - Students practice 4 skills in Listening, speaking, reading, writing Mandarin. - All elementary school students are at Stage One, according to the Massachusetts Foreign Language Curriculum Framework. They learn to speak words, phrases and simple sentences around the 4 themes mentioned above. --Detailed information for the 4 themes: Self: body parts; age, date; greetings; weather, etc.. Family: Family members, colors, fruits, animals, furniture, etc.. School: people in school, places and locations, directions, school supplies, time, etc.. Community and the World: places in a city, places, directions, transportations, courtesy expressions, holidays, numbers, etc.. MUSIC Students will:
Listening, analyzing and describing music will be essential in most lessons. | PHYSICAL EDUCATION The Josiah Quincy Elementary School Physical Education Program strives to achieve success through movement activities. The objective of the Physical Education class is to instill the joy of movement to all students to lead a healthy lifestyle. Students develop a positive self-image in an environment for all participants to play in a safe and encouraging atmosphere. Working together, sharing and being a part of a team, develops character and friendships through teamwork. Movement exploration, Fitness & Wellness, Cooperative games, sports, lead-up games, and extra-curricular activities are subject areas covered. SCIENCE ENRICHMENT In Science Enrichment, students gain knowledge and skills by making observations, conducting hands-on investigations, and creating research projects. Topics vary by grade level. They include animals, plants, sound, magnetism and electricity, rocks and minerals, simple machines, weather, and engineering. Students also use online resources in class to enhance learning and create digital presentations. SWIMMING Courtesy of the YMCA swimming instruction is offered during school hours for grades 2-5, and caters to all abilities. Whether your child has never before been in a pool, or has taken lessons for years, the Wang Y's trained instructors can help them improve all aquatics skills, including springboard diving and boating skills. VISUAL ARTS Ms. Wattles sees the arts as a language that is accessible to the very youngest learners. All children are inherent artists and using the elements of art: line, texture, shape, color, scale, value we create art by working in the many ways that artists work. We do observational drawing, draw from our imaginations, we explore materials including different types of paint, play with color, we work in a hands on process oriented spirit allowing for individual expression. |
