JQS Schoolyard Project

4/1997 Ms. Lai Lai Sheung, third grade teacher applied for and received a grant from the Boston Schoolyard Initiative to form Quincy Schoolyard Committee. Mr. Ping-Kam Chan was the Community Organizer for the project. Parents, teachers, administrators, custodians, City Year Corps members, and Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (BCNC) staff were invited to participate in this exciting project.

4/7/98 Mr. Ping-Kam Chan applied for and received a total of $22,500 from KaBOOM!/NIKE organization  to build a play structure in the lower playground. With the effort of the Quincy Schoolyard Community and community people, the Quincy School successfully raised another $16,230.10 to match the amount.

9/25/98, Quincy School and community volunteers help to erect the large structure at the second floor playground. On November 4, 1998, the new structure was dedicated to the late principal Charles H. Gibbons, Jr.

11/13/99 The Quincy Schoolyard Committee continued to meet regularly to plan the second phase of the schoolyard improvement. On 11/13/99, parents, teachers, administrators, City Year Corps members, community people, and the entire Harvard University Rowing Team installed the second play structure on the rooftop.
